Watermark: part of the Arms of Amsterdam (figs. 1 & 2)

The Arms of Amsterdam is a Tripartite shield with three St. Andrew’s crosses arranged vertically. Lion rampart is to either side and a shield is surmounted by a crown. The French manufactured papers specifically for the French market, such as this one. According to Nancy Ash and Shelley Fletcher, in Watermarks in Rembrandt’s Prints (1998), the Arms of Amsterdam appears in some impressions of the Old Bearded Man in a High Fur Cap, with Eyes Closed, and in particular, the top fragment of the watermark. This watermark appears on other prints by Rembrandt, such as The Raising of Lazarus: Small Plate (1642) and Jupiter and Antiope: The Large Plate (1659).
