Tabloid photographer Weegee did everything he could to bolster his reputation as the premier photographer of crimes, murder, and mayhem. Here, Weegee himself poses for a mugshot at the police station, linking his own image directly to the shadowy world of crime. Yet, Mugshot not only references Weegee’s own engagement with sensationalism, celebrity, and photography but also speaks to the history of the photographic medium and its relationship to crime and social order.
