Victoria Sambunaris has crisscrossed the United States to observe and photograph the ways in which the ever-evolving landscape has been transformed by human social, technical, and economic development. Inspiring both awe and trepidation, Sambunaris’s photograph of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System at the point where it reaches its highest elevation at Atigun Pass depicts the astonishingly vast scale of both the Alaskan environment and the human-made structure that traverses it. The Alaska Pipeline transports crude oil across more than 800 miles from Prudhoe Bay in the north to the port city of Valdez in the south.
