This sleeping child with tousled hair, stretched out on a
luxurious velvet-draped armchair, is likely the Prince Imperial, son of Emperor
Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie of France. Regardless of the artist’s or
sitter’s identity, this photograph—which is known only in this single example—possesses
a beauty and intimacy rarely found in portraits of the period.
