In 2000 Fazal Sheikh returned to some of the refugee camps where he had photographed in the early 1990s. He found some of the same people and, nearly a decade later, heard about many of the same problems plaguing the camps—particularly rape and assault against refugee women. Before he left the Dagahaley camp, Abshiro Aden Mohammed, the Women’s Leader of the refugees, said that she would like to tell him some things about the condition of Somali women, both in Somalia and in the refugee camps. She presented Sheikh with a carefully written letter that she had dictated to her son.
