Douglas’s film noir–inspired photograph depicts the neighborhood colloquially
known as “Hogan’s Alley” in his native Vancouver as it existed in 1948—a rowdy,
ramshackle district notorious for its brothels, gambling dens, drinking
establishments, and ethnic minorities. In fact, this nighttime aerial view is a
historical reimagining of a place that no longer exists outside the artist’s
computer. Based on deep research using historical photographs, archival film
footage, and written documents, Douglas constructed his scene down to the
minutest detail using 3D rendering software, then orchestrated the lighting and
selected his elevated vantage point for maximum effect.
