DescriptionThe tiles surrounding the fireplace in this room are Dutch delftware, a kind of earthenware with tin oxide added to its lead glaze formula to render it an opaque white. The purple color of the decoration results from manganese oxide. Each of the tiles illustrates a scene from the Bible, and each is inscribed with the book, chapter, and verse that it represents.
ProvenanceRykers, by 1960; [Ginsburg & Levy, New York, 1960]; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg, 1961; given to MFAH, by 1966.
