Esther Bubley was one of the first women to make a living in the male-dominated world of photojournalism in the 1940s and 1950s. Making photographs primarily for publication, Bubley also received recognition in the art world. Edward Steichen included her photographs in several exhibitions he curated at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and she had a solo show in 1956 at Limelight Gallery, the city’s premier photography gallery in the 1950s. Bubley was particularly known for her pictures of ordinary people, of all walks of life, in the course of their everyday lives.
