DescriptionIn the late 1970s, when the nation experienced the oil shock and other economic challenges, Suzuki Kiyoshi continued to explore the lives of those on the margins of society in his later series, finding points of connection to his personal life. Mind Games was inspired by his memory of a circus that he had attended as a child in his hometown. It consists of images of members of a small circus and of a homeless man, Tetsuo Urasaki, who lived in a cardboard house in the photographer’s Yokohama neighborhood. In this image, Urasaki’s gaze, seen through the cardboard-made dwelling, demonstrates Suzuki’s straightforward approach to a photographic subject.
