Description

Part of a decade-long photographic exploration
of El Paso and Ciudad Juárez, cities straddling the U.S.-Mexico border, Scott
Dalton’s picture shows the funeral of Sergio Adrián Hernández Güereca. While
playing with three friends, each running across the unmarked boundary to touch
the border fence before running back, the unarmed 15-year-old was shot by a
U.S. Border Patrol agent standing on U.S. territory. In February 2020—10 years
after the event— the Supreme Court ruled that Hernández Güereca’s parents could
not sue the responsible agent in U.S. courts because their son was on the
Mexican side of the border when killed.
