DescriptionThe distinct age category known as “teenager” emerged after World War II with a wave of teenage baby boomers. New high schools were built to accommodate their numbers, giving them a social sphere outside of the family home. While the availability of cars provided independence, rapid economic growth gave these teens disposable income. Joseph Sterling photographed the rising teenage culture at midcentury. His style, both intimate and detached, perfectly matched his subjects’ ideal attitude: in a word, cool.
ProvenanceThe artist, d. 2010; inherited by Deborah Sterling, 2010; purchased by John S. Parsley and Nancy Nolan Parsley, Houston, 2012; given to MFAH, 2012.
