Published References • The Naval Chronicle: containing a general and biographical history of the royal navy of the United Kingdom with a variety of original papers on nautical subjects. (London: J. Gold, 1799): 97. The story of Captain Edward Knowles’s naval career appears as a footnote in a biographical chapter on his father, Sir Charles Knowles, Bart., in The Naval Chronicle, published in London in 1799. The portrait is referenced in this text, noting that it was painted by Cotes using a “profile shade,” or, silhouette: “A portrait of this gentleman was painted by the late Sir Coates, from a profile shade, and the description given by his father.” • Edward Mead Johnson, Francis Cotes: Complete Edition with a Critical Essay and a Catalogue (Oxford: Phaidon, 1976), 63. The most recent catalog of the work of Francis Cotes was published in 1976; Captain Edward Knowles, R.N. is listed in the publication as “present whereabouts unknown”.
