DescriptionBeginning in the late 1960s, embracing the hand-held camera and high contrast black-and white film, he photographed in the streets, indifferent to technical and compositional customs and niceties. Inspired by the American photographer William Klein for the use of instantaneous conditions and natural light, Moriyama purposely sought to blur, scratch, and mis-expose, leading critics to inveigh against his are, bure, boke, konpora (rough, blurred out-of-focus, contemporary) approach to photography. Here, an image of a narrow back street, is an excellent example of his practice, and a rare vintage print from his camera work in northern Japan in the late 1960s.
