Vincent Cianni photographed over 100 gay and lesbian veterans
and active-duty service members in the period leading up to, and directly
following, the end of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” Instituted in 1994, that policy
prohibited American military personnel from openly expressing their gay,
lesbian, or bisexual identity. Until it was rescinded in 2011, “outed” service
members were discharged from the military, with very few exceptions, regardless
of the duration or quality of their service. Fear of such exposure is evident
with “JB” and “Torrey,” as one tilted his head downward to conceal his face,
and neither chose to reveal his full name.
