DescriptionThe process of decorating ceramics by transferring the image from an engraved copper plate was used first in England in the early 1750s. The first such wares were printed over the glaze; underglaze printing came later in the 1750s, first at Worcester. The tea bowl and saucer are decorated with a transfer print depicting a garden tea party. The scene is based on an engraved print by Robert Hancock and was one of the most popular transfer-printed designs.
Provenance[David Stockwell (1907–1996), Wilmington, Delaware]; purchased by Miss Ima Hogg, 1967; given to MFAH, 1967.
