Jennifer Steinkamp has transformed the landscape of contemporary art through her profoundly beautiful video projections that celebrate the ebb and flow of the natural world. Using digital animation to distill the forces of nature and chart the passage of time, Steinkamp also builds her work around the ways in which light can both define and dematerialize architectural space.
Orbit 11 depicts the celestial mechanics of a fictional planet spinning through the span of one year. Steinkamp fills the foreground with representations of trees seen from below, with their branches, flowers, and leaves blown by turbulent winds. Over time, all four seasons—spring, summer, fall, and winter—follow one another in a rapid cycle of birth, decay, and rebirth. And as the seasons progress, this cycle of nature also becomes one with the heavens above.
