DescriptionIn the late 1980s, Naoya Hatakeyama began making several related series of photographs that explored the limestone industry in Japan, first in Iwate Prefecture, where he grew up. He photographed the quarries (Lime Hills), the factories where the lime is cut (Lime Works), and the Japanese cities built by the concrete made with the limestone. Through these interlinked projects, Hatakeyama has effectively portrayed the life cycle of Japanese cities via one common material. These early works soon led him to produce the series Blasts, photographs of the explosive moment of blasting the limestone.
