DescriptionRickard plays off a long tradition of street photography, bringing it squarely into the digital age. He trains his eye on socioeconomically depressed areas of the country through the “Street View” lens of Google Maps. First, Rickard searches out uncanny moments, spectral figures, and intriguing compositions unexpectedly captured by Google’s computer-controlled camera. He then photographs his computer screen and manipulates the appropriated image by removing the Google watermark and emphasizing the muted colors and warped, pixilated perspective. Rickard’s pictures highlight the rapidly growing disparity between the wealth of information and opportunities for connection online and the changing nature of interactions in the real world.
