Description

The German film director and photographer Leni Riefenstahl is best known for her documentary art of the 1930s, used as propaganda for the Nazi party. Her close ties to the ruling political party gave her unprecedented access to the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, for which she produced a two-part documentary film and numerous photographs. Though Riefenstahl’s background as a dancer gave her a sensitivity to the beauty inherent in the athletes’ movements—her film Olympia is listed among the most visually compelling documentaries of all time by film scholars—her political ideologies haunt each frame and her legacy.
