DescriptionThe most common southern stoneware form was the storage jar, which held various quantities of prepared and preserved foods, flour, or grain. Jars of three or more gallons often held salted meat, lard, or both. Most large storage jars did not have lids during this period. The contents were secured by covering the rim with cloth or paper, and tying it down with string.
