DescriptionThis elegantly shaped and glazed pitcher is the work of master potter John Leopard. Like several early Texas potters, Leopard had roots in the Edgefield District of South Carolina, the southern source of the ash-based glaze for stoneware that spread throughout much of the deep South during this period. Leopard experimented with different components in his glazes which produced striking effects of color and texture.
Provenance[Jon St. Clair, Austin]; purchased by William J. Hill (1934–2018), Houston, 2003; given to MFAH, 2012.
