DescriptionA wedding portrait of Marie Svoboda Fikac and Anton Fikac taken in 1928 on a farm near Shiner, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Fikac were only married for a few days when Mr. Fikac went out into the field to shoot crows that were eating the corn. When he didn't return, the family went to look for him and found him shot. As common practice of the time and the lack of a funeral home in the area, the body was kept in the family home until the burial; this photograph was taken in their home. Mrs. Fikac had arranged for the wedding portrait prior to the death of Mr. Fikac. Always insisting that the photograph is a wedding portrait and not a memorial portrait, Mrs. Fikac frequently noted that she had both wedding candles lit for the sitting. Several years later Mrs. Fikac married again to Mr. Anton Hrncir.
ProvenanceLeona Marie Svoboda Bowen, Houston; given to MFAH, 2010.
