two severely fractured humerus bones, this photograph was included in The
Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion. Massive in scope
and scale, this text documented thousands of Civil War medical cases and served
as a reference manual for traumatic injuries. According to the volume, the
humerus on the left came from N. A. Sewall, a 25 year old Union soldier. The
humerus on the right came from D. S. Doggett, a Confederate soldier in the 35th
Battalion Virginia Cavalry. The broken bones of both soldiers demonstrate the
human cost of war on both sides of the conflict.
