For decades, Mariette Pathy Allen has photographed
transgender people throughout the United States, Cuba, and Thailand. Rather than
focus solely on people who easily “pass” (who are correctly seen by the outside
world as the gender they identify as, or are not perceived as transgender),
Pathy Allen sensitively photographs individuals in the process of
transitioning, or who, because of age, financial circumstance, or personal choice,
do not easily conform to society’s rigid standards for masculine and feminine appearance.
This intimate yet causal portrait of glamorously dressed Paula and her young daughter Rachel highlights the deep bonds of family that
transcend transition.
