Perhaps
Barbara Probst’s early career as a sculptor is what prompted her to conceive of
photography in an unusually spatial way, rather than as a single perspective
rendered in two dimensions. In her Exposure
series, a single instant is captured simultaneously by several cameras.
“Each image tells the same story in a different way,” she remarked, noting that
none is more truthful than the others. Challenging photography’s reputation for
veracity, Probst said, “A photograph is always derived from a point of view,
and a point of view is by nature subjective. There is no objective point of view.”
