In her compelling work, photographer Suzanne
Opton aims, as she says, “to photograph those things that people wouldn’t talk
about.” For her, there is nothing more taboo than the experience of war. Young
men and women returning home from conflict zones often carry the burden of what
they have witnessed alone. She has said, “I thought that by looking in the face
of a young person who had witnessed something unforgettable we might imagine
what he had seen or done, or not done.”
