Object Type
Marta María Pérez Bravo has dedicated her practice to exploring
the Yoruba traditions brought to Cuba by African slaves. The history, myths,
and ritualistic practices of the Afro-Cuban religion Santería have been the
subject matter of her artistic performances and more often of her photographs.
Vignetting her image to create an otherworldly halo, Bravo focuses on a
Catholic symbol of benediction that merged with indigenous and African
spiritual beliefs in the Caribbean.
