Initially an Abstract Expressionist painter, Raúl Martínez became best known for a distinctively Cuban style of Pop Art painting and graphic design. Reflecting a love of collage and repetition that was nurtured in his student years at the Institute of Design in Chicago, Martínez handpainted elements of this photograph, including a poster commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Committee for the Defense of the Revolution, postcards featuring the logo of the Communist Party of Cuba, and Cuban flags, along with pieces of cardboard holding multiple photographs depicting the Cuban astronaut Arnaldo Tamayo.
