Unlike Daruma in his cave, Konoe Nobutada was a man of wealth and refinement and was a high-ranking minister of the Imperial Court. To this day, he is renowned for his elegant calligraphies. Though not a Zen monk, he nonetheless painted numerous Zen subjects, employing a more rustic style, as seen here, that seems at odds with his elevated calligraphic works.
